The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) in collaboration with the UN Environment organized the First National BCH capacity building workshop in the context of the UN Environment – Global Environment Facility Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH III) from 6-8 March 2018 in Okahandja, Namibia.

The workshop aimed at providing the country's key stakeholders with a common understanding of: the common format of the BCH records as well as the methods for finding information and the procedures for registering and publishing biosafety related decisions and identifying national procedures and operational linkages to gather information to be put on the BCH in line with the NBF's implementation and sustainability and training plan. The workshop was attended by 23 participants from governmental ministries, agencies, farmers, agroprocessors, media offices and NGOs. The opening remarks were given by Mr Vincent Nowaseb (General Manager of Innovation and Technology Development) and facilitated by Paulus Mungeyi (Biotechnology Manager), Lavinia Mbongo (Biosafety inspector) all from NCRST and  Dr Ossama AbdelKawy (anglophone Africa regional Specialist), and David Hafashimana (regional Advisor) of the BCH3 project, UN Environment of an effective participation to the BCH, and operational linkages to gather information to be placed on the BCH in line with national biosafety policy and biosafety framework.

 

Outcomes of the first national biosafety clearing house training workshop

 

·         Participants were successfully introduced to the Biosafety Clearing House.

·         Participants have a common understanding of the common format of the BCH records as well as the methods for finding information and the procedures for registering and publishing biosafety related decisions and identifying national procedures.

·         Participants have a better understanding of operational linkages to gather information to be put on the BCH in line with the National Biosafety Framework's implementation and sustainability and training plan.
