The launch of the national genetically modified organism (GMO) testing, training and research laboratory on 29 January 2018

In the latter part of 2017 the NCRST has been engaged with renovations at the Innovation Hub while at the same time converting some parts of the Hub into the National Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), Testing, Training and Research Laboratory. This work was successfully completed on 8 December 2017.

The laboratory will provide testing services for GMOs as part of the implementation of the Biosafety Act, 2006 (Act No. 7 of 2006). The establishment of the laboratory is crucial in ensuring that only GMOs and GMO products that are approved for use in Namibia are indeed on the market and also for ensuring traceability all along the whole supply chain from seed producers to final consumers. Apart from providing testing facilities for GMOs, the laboratory is also designed for research and training in the field of biotechnology. Thus, the laboratory will play a big role building local capacity in terms of producing a cadre of professional and researchers in this field and ultimately producing bio-products that are designed for and suited for local use, rather than always relying on.

In addition to the laboratory, the hub is envisaged to host national projects such as the Science Demonstration Center, Incubation Center for Innovators and Entrepreneurs, Demola Namibia as well as the Southern African Innovation Support (SAIS) II Programme.
