Mock Application Evaluation Training Workshop on GMOS and GMO Products

The NCRST in partnership with the NEPAD Agency African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE), hosted a training workshop on  review and evaluation of applications for dealings with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) from 19 - 21 September 2017 at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Auditorium, Swakopmund. The workshop aimed at building capacity of individuals and institutions that will be involved in the evaluation of applications for permits to deal with GMOs or specified products derived from GMOs. The training workshop covered the  basic principles of handling and assessing GMO applications based on international best practices.

Outcomes of the Mock Application Evaluation Training Workshop on GMOs and GMO Products

  • The participants were successfully introduced to basic principles of handling GMO applications.
  • Participants have basic understanding of risk analysis in decision-making pathways.
  • Participants have a better understanding of socio-economic issues that may be considered during evaluation of applications.
  • A follow up meeting is needed to give in-depth understanding of food safety assessment and environmental risk assessment.
