31 Mar 2017

In order to raise awareness and build the capacity of individuals and institutions that will be involved in the implementation of the Biosafety Act, 2006 (Act No. 7 of 2006), the NCRST hosted a series of regional workshops on the implementation of the Biosafety Act, 2006 (Act No. 7 of 2006) in all 14 regions of Namibia. These workshops commenced on 24 October 2016 in Khomas Region and the last workshop was held on 30 March 2017 in Omaheke Region. The workshops covered presentations on the overview of the Biosafety regulatory framework, Biosafety Procedures and Guidelines to stakeholders.

Outcome of the Regional workshop on the implementation of the Biosafety Act, 2006

  • More public awareness is required to provide for the basic understanding of GMOs.
  • There is need to address national food systems when it comes to food safety as well as food and nutrition security;
  • There is need to translate Biotechnology/Biosafety information into all indigenous languages using various media (e.g. brochures, radio and/or television).
  • There is need to speed up gazetting the GMO product list
  • There is an urgent need to set up the GM food and feed testing laboratory as part of implementing the Biosafety regulatory framework.
  • There is need to carry out phase II of the baseline survey in order to establish the status of GM crops in Namibia
